BIOGRAPHY

Willard Wallace grew up around Hope, KS and attended Hope Schools until the family moved to California. Wallace drove a truck for the Joe Baier Trucing Co. and married Lois Stockwell, January 1, 1942. Wallace was indicted into the Army on August 8, 1942 and had basic training at Shepperd Field, TX. Next he was sent to Sioux Falls, SD to a Radio T.T.S. When he graduated he was sent to officer's candidate school at Wayne, PN for six weeks. Next he spent 6 weeks at Yale University, New Haven, Conn. There he received his commission as Second Lieutenant. Wallace was stationed with the 402nd Squadron in Davis Monthan Field, Tucson, AZ. He was rated as a technical office in communications. Wallace's duty was to assume duties with technical units of the army air force. Wallace trained to use and operate transmitters, receivers, the radio compass, wire equipment, and portable ground stations. Courtesy of the Dickinson County Heritage Center and Museum.

BIOGRAPHY

James "Bud" Walton was born in Kingfisher, OK on December 20, 1921 to Thomas and Nancy Walton. Thomas was a farm appraiser and Mortgage agent. Bud worked odd jobs growing up, delivering papers, as a life guard and doing yardwork. He was on the varsity basketball team and senior President at the Hickman High School in Columbia, MO. After graduation, he attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO. In 1941 he enlisted in the Navy becoming a Pilot. After the war Bud began working with the Ben Franklin stores, leading to his involvement in founding Walmart with his brother Sam Walton. Courtesy of Wikipedia and Military Wiki.

BIOGRAPHY

Samuel Moore Walton was born in Kingfisher, OK., March 29,1918 the first child to Thomas and Nancy Walton. He was an Eagle Scout, quarterback of the state champion football team and student council president. Walton was voted "most versatile boy" of his graduating class at Hickmann High School in Columbia MO, in 1936. Walton worked his way through the University of Missouri at Columbia, delivering newspapers, waiting tables and as a clerk at a five-and-dime store. He took classes in the Army's Reserve Office Training Corps and served as president of the senior class and honor society. After graduating in 1940, with a degree in economic, he worked for J.C. Penney Co. for 18 months. Expecting to be drafted he left and worked at DuPont munitions until drafted in 1942. Walton served state side, due to a heart condition, at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, UT., with the US Army Intelligence Corps, supervising security at aircraft plants. He worked up to Captain and was discharge in 1945. At that time, Walton took a management job at a variety store and later, with his brother Bud Walton, founded Walmart. Walton received "the Presidential Medal of Freedom" from President George HW Bush for "his strong commitment to service and for values that help individuals". June Wandrey Mann (1920-2005) was a First Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps during WW II. She was the author of "Bedpan Commando" an account of her military service in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germand. She was awarded eight battle stars. Courtesy of American Military History

BIOGRAPHY

David A Warkentine was born August 31, 1926 on a farm near Goessell, KS to Henry and Katie (Schmidt) Warkentine. David enjoyed life with his two older brothers and a younger sister on the family farm. During World War II, he worked for area farmed until he turned 18, when he was drafted and entered into the Navy.
