BIOGRAPHY

Wilfred Vargas was born in Salina, KS. number seven of eight children When his father, Benjamin was shot and died, his mother moved the family to Nebraska and then to Colorado, looking for work and shelter. When Paula Ramirez Vargas passed in 1932, Wilfred and his Brother Alfred, the youngest in the family,  went to stay at the St. Joseph orphanage in Abilene, KS. During his stay in Abilene, Vargas saw Dwight Eisenhower sitting on the family home porch. Vargas enlisted and served in the Marine Corps. His training was in San Diego his commission was in the communications unit. Vargas served in the Marshal Island and Saipan in the Pacific. Vargas had recently turned 100 at the time of the interview in November of 2023.

BIOGRAPHY

Francis J. Veltman entered the army at Fort Leavenworth, KS, then trained at the infantry school at Camp Hood, TX, departing for overseas duty on January 9, 1945. Prior to his transfer to the replacement depot, Veltman was assigned to Service Battery, 911th Artillery Battalion, 86th "Blackhawk" Infantry Division. He participated in combat with the 38th Infantry division on Luzon, Philippine Islands. Veltman's specialty was quartermaster supply technician. He was awarded the Combat Infantry badge for exemplary performance of duty with the 38th (Cyclone) division against the Japanese Shimbu line, east of Manila. At that time, he was a rifleman in Co. L, 152nd infantry. On May 29, 1945, while taking the point, he was wounded by sniper gunfire on Mt. Purro and was forced to proceed on a 3 mile trek out of the rough terrain to an Allied safety zone. He would eventually be discharged in October of 1946. Biographical information courtesy of Francis J. BIOGRAPHY

Military Specialty: Fire Control Computer. Bernard Veltman's Certificate of Commendation reads: During the action at EL GUETTAR, TUNISIA, T/4 Veltman was engaged in computing fire data for his battery. Despite intense hostile artillery fire on his station he continued to compute and transmit fire data to his battery accurately, thus aiding materially in neutralizing the enemy guns. Such courage and devotion to duty are highly commendable. After his World War II service, Bernard Veltman graduated from Kansas State University and was employed as county engineer for Geary and Ford counties. Brother Francis J. Veltman also served in World War II.

BIOGRAPHY

Abraham "Abe" Vigoda was born on February 24,1921 in Brooklyn, NY. Abe graduated High School and worked as a printer before enlisting in the US Army in 1943. He was discharged in 1946 and used the GI Bill to study acting at The American Theater Wing in New York City. Not much is know about his military career but he was proud of his military services - as his gravestone states "US Army World War II . Abe had a successful acting career including parts in "The Godfather" and Fish on the series "Barney Miller", which led to a spin off to the series "Fish" . He also appeared on many other TV services such as Mannix, Hawaii Five-O, The Rockford Files, MacGyver and Law & Order - to name a few. Courtesy of WW II uncovered.
