BIOGRAPHY

Martin enlisted on Nov. 13, 1942. He entered the 21st Seabees as Seaman 1st Class on March 8, 1943. He served in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska until December 4, 1943 when 21st. returned to Port Hueneme, then to Pearl Harbor. There they assembled pontoon barges and causeways for the invasion of the Western Pacific Islands. In February 1945 they moved to Saipan and after several months the 21st Naval Construction Battalion was sent toward Okinawa. On Route the LST #641 that Seaman Koch was transported on, came under fire from an enemy submarine. The 21st was transported on three separate LST's for that very reason. This was on April 21, 1945. The LST made it thru and arrived at Okinawa to help win that Island by July 1945. While in the Navy, Seaman Koch was awarded the Expert Marksman, Bronze Star, Victory Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific campaign ribbons. He was honorably discharge and mustered out with $100 on January 10, 1946.

BIOGRAPHY

Roger Kohrs was born on a farm near Turkey Creek. He attended grade school at Dayton and Asherville, KS. He entered high school at Hope, KS. but left his junior year to go to the army. He was a star football player and a very fast track man. Kohrs entered the service August 1, 1944, and was sent to Camp Hood, TX. to train for the Infantry. He transferred to Ft Ord, CA. Kohrs sailed into the south pacific with the 25th Division. He was part of the occupational forces in the Japanese empire.

Gordon served in the European, African, Middle Eastern, and American Theater with duty in Rhineland and Central Europe. While on duty, Gordon received the first teletype surrender message from the German High command in May 1945.

BIOGRAPHY

Kramer entered the Army in Sept. 1940 and served as an enlisted soldier until he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Signal Corps in March 1943 after attending OCS. He served with the 4th Infantry Division from July 1943 to February 1945 first as the communications officer for the 4th Recon. Troop, and later as a Recon. Platoon Leader from September 1944 - February 1945. He attended an Infantry Officer Course in the Spring of 1945 in Europe, and was then assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, as the Battalion Communications Officer. He was relieved from Active Duty in Dec. 1945 but was recalled to active duty in 1947 and retired as a Major in the Army Security Agency in May 1962. Thereafter he worked for the National Security Agency and then the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center as a Computer Systems Analyst until his death in August 1974.

BIOGRAPHY

Jay Kramer was born May 21, 1925 in Clay County, Kansas, the son of John and Esther (Bruns) Kramer. He grew up in the Longford, KS area and graduated from Longford Rural High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. Jay married Betty Lou Beals on May 16, 1948 and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006. The couple farmed in the Longford area until moving to Emporia in 1984, where Jay worked as a mail carrier. They later returned to Longford. Kramer enlisted in the Army at age 19. His basic training was in Texas. The bombs had been dropped in Japan and Kramer was part of the occupation efforts. He landed in Okinawa and rode a train to Tokyo, riding by parts of the devastation from the bombs. Kramer worked in communications for the Army Air Corps..

BIOGRAPHY

 

Eugene "Gene" Kramer left his home March 15, 1943 to join the Navy at age 17. He signed all his papers and they put him on a train to Farragut. Kramer did not even get to go back home to say good-bye. Boot camp was in Farragut, Idaho where he gradated in May and was transferred to Los Angeles for radio school. Training was until December 1943 and Kramer boarded his first ship, the S. S. Philip Kearny. Kramer served on board ships through out his Naval career by receiving messages transferring them into written messages that where passed on to the Bridge. His travels included Guadalcanal, Australia New Guinea Russell Island, New Hebrides, Hawaii, Guam, Okinawa and Siapan. Kramer was one of nine children, with eight boys and one girl in his family. He went to grade school in a one-room school house in Melvern, KS. Kramer and Lorraine Thompson Kramer were married June 9, 1946, and  had five children. The couple was married 73 years. Kramer started Kramer's Gas Station with his brother, John in 1959. He also worked for many years with Murray's TV in Paola.
