BIOGRAPHY

Joined the Marines at age 17. Would serve for 24 years and retire as a Master Gunnery SGT. He caught the tail end of WW2. Also serverd in Korea, and 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. Aviation was his speciality. Flew C-47 during WW2, Flight engineer on a C-130 during Korea and crew chief and squadren crew chief of both U-34 and 46's during his 3 trips to Vietnam. Retired and passed away in 1972 due to his exposure to Agent Orange shortly after retirement.

BIOGRAPHY

Gail "Pep" Shanelec was born in Ellsworth, KS on March 17, 1925. He grew up in Ellsworth and acquired his nick name "Pep" because of his Bohemian heritage. The name stuck and he still goes by "Pep" today. Shanelec graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1943, and was drafted into the service August of 1943 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He went to Wichita Fall, TX for basic training in the Army Air Corps. Shanelec's typing skills learned in High School landed him a clerical job. The next stop was Camp Kerns in Salt Lake, Utah taking overseas training. More training was done in New Orleans and finally Shanelec was put on an ship, headed out, taking its passengers through the Panama Canal toward the South Pacific. Shanelec served on several islands during his tour. At one point, ready for a change in scenery, Shanelec talked to a pilot who was leaving his base for other Islands and he bummed a ride. They visited several places. During this time, Shanelec  was listed as AWOL. After his side trip, he returned to his post and the AWOL listing vanished. Shanelec finished his time in the service and returned to Ellsworth, KS. He attend Emporia State university becoming a teacher and coach. Shanelec married and had three children. He lived lived in Ellsworth most of his life, retired and still had his home at the time of the interview - November 2023.

BIOGRAPHY

Private First Class Ernest Shannon or 'Smiley' as he was sometimes called, was awarded the Purple Heart and also the Bronze Star Medal for hero actions in the Philippine Islands in November of 1944.

BIOGRAPHY

Jim Sharp had an agricultural deferment before enlisting at the age of 19 and completing basic training at Fort McClellan in Alabama. Deployed to France, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 1st Infantry Division, earning numerous battlefield decorations. Sharp fought in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Following the war, Sharp attended Kansas State University on the GI Bill, raised a family and retired from Kansas Farm Bureau as manager of information systems and worked as an independent business systems consultant for several years. In the fall of 1945 Sharp was selected as a Sergeant of the Guard at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany, where top Nazi leaders during World War II were put on trial for war crimes. He was responsible for security in the courtroom, prison cells and exercise areas. Sharp has written two books, 'Sgt. of the Guard at Nuremberg' and 'Diary of a Combat Infantryman.' Sharp founded and served as first president of the Kansas Chapter of the Battle of the Bulge. Role(s) in Service Combat infantryman. After Germany surrendered in May 1945, Sharp’s unit became military policemen, searching for and arresting Nazi leaders and SS troops. 'I think everybody over there (European Theater) felt just like I did that General Eisenhower was a soldier's soldier. When I was in college after the war, Eisenhower came up here (Manhattan, Kansas) and turned the first spade of earth on K-State Campus for the All Faith's Chapel, and I was there. So I saw him in person. I never shook his hand or anything like that. I've always respected him as a good general.'

BIOGRAPHY

Charles Shay was born in 1923 and grew up as a Native American on Indian Island in Maine. He was part of the Penobscot tribe. April, 1943, at the age of 19, he was drafted into the Army. His job was to be an Army medic. Shay trained hard and would be part of the D-Day landings. He received the Silver Star for saving many soldiers from drowning on June 6. He moved through Normandy with this troop and then was sent to eastern France and Germany. Shay was taken prisoner March 1945 but liberated a few weeks later. After the war, there were few jobs or well paying jobs for an Indian man so Shay reenlisted. In 2018 he moved to France. He will be attending the 80th anniversary ceremonies in Normandy. BIOGRAPHY

Francis "Frank" Sheahen was born in 1922 to Lloyd and Rena Sheahen. He was a fourth generation and lifelong resident of Highland Park, Illinois. Frank was admitted into the Naval Academy in 1941 and entered active duty 1944, serving as lieutenant and commander of the LSM 117 in the Pacific theater of WW II. Evidence of Sheahen's  entrepreneurial prowess shown through when he walked the halls of the Navy Department in Spring 1941 in search of anyone who might aid in his admission to the Naval Academy and negotiation of his successful midshipman appointment with Chester W. Nimitz, future commander-in-chef of the US Pacific Fleet. After the service Sheahen retunred to his family business in Highland Park. He married and had four children. Courtesy of Chicago Tribune

BIOGRAPHY

Robert Sheppard was born in Hope, KS on December 7, 1925 and graduated from Hope High School in May of 1943. He attended summer school and one semester at Kansas State College in Manhattan, KS. During this time he got orders to be indicted into the service. After a month deferment, Sheppard entered the Army, March 19, 1944 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He took four months basic training and after a furlough was stationed at Fort Riley, KS for a short time before going to Camp Phillips in Salina, KS. September 1, 1944, he was given the rating T-5 and was transferred to the 40th Division Artillery at San Francisco, CA., receiving his first APO ( Army Postal Office group).November 9, 1944 Sheppard wrote his mother to report he was going to the South Pacific for assignment. He mentioned there was a lot of rain and mosquitoes. When they crossed the equator, Sheppard was included in the customary ceremony for those making their first crossing. Sheppard liked the Australian soldiers he met, enjoying their accents. Sheppard saw battle with Gen. MacArthur at Leyete and Luzon in the Lingayen Gulf area. It is likely Sheppard was part of The Invasion of Lingayen Gulf, 6–9 January 1945, was an Allied amphibious operation in the Philippines during World War II. In the early morning of 6 January 1945, a large Allied force commanded by Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorf began approaching the shores of Lingayen from Lingayen Gulf, on the island of Luzon.
