Francis took his training at Great Lakes Naval Center in Illinois. He was a ship's carpenter on the battleship, USS Massachusetts.

BIOGRAPHY

Abram Edward Stoner, Jr. the oldest son of Abram E. and Esther Stoner was born August 24, 1922 in Talmage, Kansas. He passed away May 31, 1950 following a heart attack at him home in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He was 27 years, 9 months and 7 days old. He attended the Harvey school and the Talmage high school and graduated from the Dickinson County Community high school in 1940. In the fall of 1940 he went to California and took a course at the Western Air College at Alhambra and following the completion of the course worked for Lockhead Aircraft at Burbank, California. In the spring of 1943 he enlisted in the navy and joined the Sea Bees. He took basic training at Norfolk, Virginia and then served a year in the Aleutian Islands. He then was transferred to the 133rd battalion which was attached to the Fourth Marine Corps and took training in Hawaii. He took part in the invasion and the capture of Iwo Jima and saw the memorable flag raising on Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Presidential citation for bravery beyond the call of duty for his service there. After the war he served two years in Tsingtao, China and later at Frankfort, Germany with the Berlin Air Lift. He was a construction mechanic, first class, stationed at Westoyer Airbase in Westfield, Massachusetts at the time of his death. He was married to Louella Hess on March 11, 1948. He is buried in the Prairiedale Cemetery in Tamalge, Kansas.

BIOGRAPHY

Leslie Straley was born in 1903 in Ellsworth, KS. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 at the age of 39 years old at Fort Leavenworth, KS. After 3 months and 16 days he was honorably discharged, to accept employment in the essential War Industry at Camp Maxey, TX on 2/22/1943. Straley died in 1984 and is buried in The Buckeye Cemetery in Kanopolis, KS.

BIOGRAPHY

Wallace Strobel was born on June 5, 1922 and grew up in Saginaw, Michigan; the son of Carl and Elizabeth Strobel. After graduation from Arthur Hill High School, Wallace enlisted in the National Guard and consequently the United States Army. He served as a first lieutenant in the 'Screaming Eagles', the 101st Airborne Division. Lt. Strobel also served as company liaison during the invasion of Holland, parachuting into France in the early morning hours of D-Day and later serving in Bastogne, Belgium, during The Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Saginaw at the end of the war and founded, with his brother, the Carl-Wal Market. He married Josephine Grant in 1946. She survives him. He became president of Central Warehouse Company in 1947, a position he held until 1999. Mr. Strobel was a founder and served on the Board of Directors of the First State Bank of Saginaw. He served as county chairman of the Republican party and had a lifelong interest in politics. Wallace Strobel was for many years a civilian participant of The Naval War College and The Army War College. Wallace Strobel is survived by his wife, Josephine and his three children, Susan S. Waters of Ellicott City, MD; Sarah S. King of Saginaw, MI; and John F. Strobel of Westport, Conn; and six grandchildren. BIOGRAPHY

Malcom was born near Dwight, KS. He graduated from Dwight Rural High School in 1935 and went on to study agriculture; agronomy, crops, and soils at Kansas State University. After college, he started working the the USDA soil conservation in South Dakota. He received his draft notice to report to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on December 7th, 1941. He quit his job and returned home to Kansas to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family. On the bus from Topeka to Fort Leavenworth, the new soldiers were notified that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. 'It was kind of remarkable, I thought, that I was being brought into the Army on that very day that the war began.' He served as a Medical Administrative in the 102 Evacuation Hospital. After the war ended, they were still helping with casualties, so the soldiers had the opportunity to travel around Europe. He returned home and was discharged in New York City on December 8, 1945.
