PFC Whiting had been overseas for more than a year and in the Armed Forces for two years. He landed in France with the initial invasion forces and is known to have participated in several major campaigns against the Germans. He was with an anti-aircraft outfit driving across German territory. PFC Whiting was declared missing in action in Germany on March 29, 1945.
